Interview:

What genre do you write?

I write fiction in the romance, paranormal and urban fantasy genres but have been known to dabble in horror, contemporary fiction and women’s fiction. I also write non-fiction, memoir, personal essays and op-ed that focuses on politics and women’s issues.

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and do you read the same genre as you write?

I’ve been an avid reader all my life. As a kid, my favorite thing to do was to pick six books (the maximum) out of the library, take them home, read, return, repeat. My grandmother gave me all her old romances, I loved science fiction and fantasy (Lord of the Rings Trilogy-yeah) and anything about horses. Then I got my hands on some feminist works and it all came out in a very odd mélange of things I read and write.

What inspired you to write in these particular genres?

Life in New York City, especially riding the subways and walking the streets in Washington Heights and the South Bronx. Talk about paranormal, horror, and urban fantasy.  I came of age in the 1970s, when the world was just like our president-elect (gag) envisions it being once again. Hence, my activism and the edgy and irreverent tone of my memoir Someday I’m Going to Write a Book: Diary of an Urban Missionary and my novel series in progress Boulevard of Bad Spells and Broken Dreams. I’ve got excerpts of both published in several literary journals and anthologies.

On the sweet and sentimental side, I come from a large, loud, and most of the time very wonderful family. That’s where the second memoir comes in: Karma, Kickbacks and Kids. The Not Your Mother’s Books, On Being a Parent and On Being a Woman feature pieces, as does the new Necessity is a Mother Anthology and the award winning Shifts Anthology. The Unfinished Business Series of Cape Cod paranormal romances was born out of my memories of summers on the Cape, and sailing and fishing with my father, grandfather and uncles on Long Island Sound.

Where are you from?

The Bronx, New York City. Watch out.

Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?

I fall in love with the characters in all my books. Right now, my main squeeze is Mike from the Unfinished Business Series. He reminds me of my grandfather, my father, and my uncles all rolled into one.

Do you have a special formula for creating characters’ names?

Nope, they name themselves. I do astrology charts on all of them as well.

Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?

The serial killer in my horror short The Ultimate Test scared the crap out of me. My horror writer friend Andrew Richardson kept telling me, “Relax, it’s fiction.”

What is your motto?

“Petite Meets Street”

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Being home alone, doing whatever I want, which is usually reading and writing.
