Review:

This is a spin off the Black Swan Knights series. We meet Simon, the director, as a Black Swan Knight, along with his back story and how The Department of Interdimensional Trespass is formed, known as D.I.T. for short. As with all of the Black Swan Knights books Ms Danann has done a fabulous job of creating a book that keeps you enthralled from the first page to the last. This book is a quick, fun read and I enjoyed seeing a few of the characters from previous book. I enjoyed this book and you will too.

Description:

Director Simon Tvelgar can’t forget a lost love.

New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann, brings a novella to introduce a new Black Swan series.

Rosie Storm is about to get the chance to head up a new Black Swan unit, D.I.T. The Department of Interdimensional Trespass.

Twenty years ago Sir Simon was a vampire hunter. He took three month’s bereavement leave to go wild camping in the far north of Scotland following the death of his team leader. He expected solitude and fresh air to clear his mind and heart. He did not expect to fall in love. While picnicking on the stark landscape of the Orkney Islands, she disappeared into the standing stones. He turned just in time to see her fading into nothingness, a look of panic frozen on her face. As she reached out and silently called his name, he lunged to grab her an instant too late.

She was gone. But her memory has haunted him every hour since.

Simon channeled his sorrow and loneliness into work until he eventually rose to the most powerful position ever held by an ex Black Swan knight. With tireless dedication, he built a congregation of talented misfits, watching and waiting for the one who could find Shivaun.

Find out why Black Swan has won best paranormal romance series the past four years in a row!

Excerpt:

“You’re a very good cook, Simon. Some woman is goin’ to be lucky to have you for a mate.”

“I don’t know. I think perhaps on balance my less desirable qualities might outweigh my cooking skills.”

“What are your less desirable qualities?” Simon opened his mouth to answer, but she changed her mind. “Ne’er mind. I do no’ want to know. For tonight I want to believe that you’re perfect. A god fallen to Earth from that star,” she looked up in the sky and pointed, “right there.”

“Suit yourself,” he smiled.

“How old are you?”

“Twenty three. How old are you?”

“Twenty nine. You seem much older. I would’ve guessed that you’re closer to my age.”

He smirked. “Vampire hunting ages a person.”

“You’re stickin’ with that vampire huntin’ business, are you?”

“That’s my story.” His casual nonchalance would never be taken as cover for the truth about his occupation.

She rolled her eyes. “How long are you on holiday?”

“I’m not exactly on holiday. A friend died. He was a close friend, more like family really. So I’m out here to…”

Watching him struggle to find the right words, she offered, “Clear your head and free your heart?”

If Simon had spent a year contemplating how best to answer why he was there, he would not have been able to come up with a more perfect and concise description of his reasons. He didn’t answer, just reached over and pulled Sorcha close enough to him so that he could kiss her the way he’d been thinking all through dinner. With the firelight reflecting on her face, she had him believing that she was the goddess who likely fell to Earth from the brightest star in the heavens above.

It took little urging to get her to scoot closer a look of sensual anticipation on her face.

“You done this before, human?”

Simon smiled sardonically. “Couple of times,” he said just before pressing a soft kiss to her mouth. When she deepened the kiss, with an unmistakable flavor of demand and insistence, he chuckled. He’d been thinking sweet and slow. She was apparently thinking eager and faster. He was just as cool with eager and faster. So he let her set the pace.

Flanked by the Atlantic to the west and North Sea to the east, the Orkneys enjoyed a surprisingly mild climate. At least that’s what the travel brochures say. But forties didn’t feel mild if a wet wind whipped up after the sun finally set and sleeping arrangements are outdoors on the ground.

It took a few minutes to figure out how to reconfigure the sleeping bag zippers so that they could take advantage of the combination of modern fiber technology and body heat.

“How can it be so hard?” She laughed.

“It’s like a puzzle,” he replied. “We’re both reasonably bright, well educated persons. We’ll figure it out. Just be patient.”

She growled. “I’m no’ feelin’ patient. I’m feelin’ eager.”

Description:

Torn has been transferred to D.I.T. to help run down an interdimensional anomaly in Dublin. He’s spent his whole life running from his own inner demons until a beautiful hunter brings him to a full stop.

From New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann, called “Queen of Alpha Males” by Slashed Reads.

When Sir Torrent Finngarick arrives in Dublin, he’s partnered with Sheridan, one of a pair of elf twins who put the hot in hawt and the war in warrior.

He needs to get his mind off the wild, redheaded beauty because there’s an interdimensional stream portal somewhere in the vicinity of Trinity College and Temple Bar. So far as they can tell, it’s been causing havoc for centuries. Simon wants it found and monitored. If anything comes through, he wants to know about it. If anything goes through, he wants his Dublin D.I.T. team to run it down.

Maybe there’s a reason why Black Swan has won best paranormal romance series the past four years in a row!

Excerpt:

When it came to my attention that D.I.T. was going to Dublin, I thought of Torn Finngarick. After all he knew the culture and could, perhaps, be useful. I confess to the ulterior motive of wanting to see all the floaters brought in from the cold. He was one of the remaining few. And everybody deserves another chance. Right?

As I mentioned earlier, my wife was working for Black Swan setting up a unit called Department of Interdimensional Trespass. It seemed that creatures coming and going at will were causing havoc that had, until recently, been unexplained, believed to be fiction of the myth or folklore variety, or dismissed as interplanetary visitations. Rosie was busy hiring and training people who were going to function as police.

Anyway, I had served with Sir Finngarick when I was first knighted as the fourth member of the infamous Z Team and came to know him quite well. Most believed he was irredeemable. I did not.

“FIVE STARS for one of the most peculiar high school experiences of all time!”  – The World is Hers for the Reading

New York Times bestselling author, Victoria Danann dishes up a stunning new teen/young adult series like nothing else.

Jean Marre’s recent life has been one big surprise right after another. First his family moved to SoCal from a remote French Canadian town. Then he began feeling a strange compulsion to watch over a smart little blonde named Ever Moore. In fact he found himself restless, distracted, and uncomfortable if she wasn’t around.

Before there was time to adjust to any of that, he was informed that his parents were going to South Africa for a few months and leaving him with his mother’s friend, who happened to be Ever’s mother.

Life just couldn’t get stranger.

Or could it?

Find out why readers are calling #rcainehs funny, fast paced, and fabulous with flair.

If you haven’t already read the introduction, The Game Begins, get it on Amazon and start reading today.

Excerpt:

Jean Marre folded himself into the front passenger seat of Ever’s car to ride to school. For the entire fifteen minutes it took to get there, neither said one word to the other. That did not, however, mean that they didn’t dork with each other all the way there.

Jean Marre’s opening shot was to change her satellite radio to a different channel. Hair Band Nation. She gaped at him for a full four seconds when her eyes should have been on the road before punching the number one button to return to Sounds of the SuperNow. He stared at her blankly for a matching four seconds then, without taking his gaze away from her or changing expression, reached over and pushed the button to return to “last played”. Hair Band Nation.

After three more volleys, Ever turned the radio off with a snarl. When Jean Marre started to reach for it, she gave him a look that froze his had midair. He withdrew the offending appendage, but the challenge Ever offered with her look brought a gleam of amusement to his eyes.

He did not touch the radio again.

Instead he rolled down his window which, of course, threatened to make a beachy wreck of her hair. She rolled it back up. He rolled it down. She rolled it back up and, with a sneer of victory, pushed the child lock into place before he could do it again. His bark of laughter surprised her and, if she was being perfectly honest, pleased her.

She was not being perfectly honest. He had a nice laugh, but she was not ready to give him any concession.

She pulled into her assigned parking space, which was located in the remotest region of Mongolia because she was a sophomore, got out, and started walking without looking back. It was a hike, but at least she could bring a car, unlike freshmen.

Halfway there she looked over her shoulder. Jean Marre was about twenty feet behind her. “Don’t worry about me.” He grinned. “I like the view from here.”

Understanding the implication, Ever sped up, which made Jean Marre laugh loud enough for her to hear. The boy seemed to revel in being exasperating. That realization caused Ever to think she needed to reform her approach to Jean Marre. Perhaps she needed to think in terms of opposite world, since everything she did rendered the reverse of a desired effect.

She stopped, got control of her breathing, waited for him to catch up and fell in at the same pace. She would never admit that they were walking together. Only that they were moving toward the same place at the same time at the same speed. Together.

When he said, “Excellent choice,” she knew she’d been manipulated. By a boy who didn’t even want to go to college. It was vexing, to say the least.

WOW! Author Victoria Danann has another mega hit on her hands! For anyone who loved The Order of the Black Swan, Falcon: The New Generation, continues that incredible series with the old crew, but also with younger recruits we met previously. I fell in love with Falcon in an earlier book: this novel just reiterated that adoration. While reading this novel, I laughed, I cried, and I never wanted it to end. In fact, I didn’t put it down even once. I am very eagerly anticipating the next novel in this enchanting series.

Excerpt:

Storm wanted to appear nonchalant, but couldn’t help sneaking a glance at Ram when he said, “I’ll bet Elora would like to sashay by there tonight. We know she has a thing for talking vampire.”

Ram caught the mischievous gleam in Storm’s eye and knew Storm was teasing, but it was also a dig that didn’t go down easy. After three children and years of married life, the way Baka and Elora had interacted, back in the day, still bothered Ram. And Storm knew it.

Rammel carefully set his whiskey tumbler down on the table beside him before launching himself out of his chair so fast it looked like he’d been sitting on an eject mechanism. He flew across the space that separated them and attempted to get Storm in a headlock.

“What are you doing?!?” Storm wheezed, turning red and trying to get his breath while Ram’s forearm cut off his windpipe. “It was a joke!”

Ram didn’t respond to that protest because he didn’t care if it was a joke. He jerked Storm out of the chair by his neck, which was a testament to Ram’s strength because Storm was still a big well-muscled guy. As soon as they fell to the floor together, Ram hauled back and launched a fist that caught Storm in the side. Storm reacted by rolling over so that he could get enough room to clip Ram on the side of the face. Kay, of course, was yelling and doing his best to break it up, but in the process took punishing hits from both of them.

Several of the other knights came to assist Kay and fifteen minutes later, the three veteran members of B Team were standing in the Sovereign’s office, being called on the carpet like they were kids.

“The. Hel.” said Glen, clearly furious. “Every trainee in Jefferson Unit has already heard that B Team were brawling in our own club lounge, rolling around on the floor like… like…”

“Brawlers?” Kay suggested.

“Famous legendary elite vampire hunters indeed.” The sarcasm was dripping from every word Glen uttered. “A fine example you set for the next generation tonight.”

“He started it,” Storm mumbled.

“You did not say what I think you just said,” Glen looked incredulous. “Is this some kind of midlife crisis?”

That hit a mark. All three men looked horrified. “We’re no’ yet even thirty five,” Ram protested.

“You’re acting like you’re not yet five.”

Ram glared at Storm. “There are just some things you do no’ say about an elf’s mate.”

Glen pulled back and studied Ram for a minute. “I don’t believe there is any power in heaven or hel that could make me believe Engel Storm insulted Elora Laiken.”

“Well,” Ram hedged, “he did no’ insult her per se.”

“Per se,” Glen repeated.

“Aye. Per se.”

Glen threw up his hands. “You know, I don’t really care what happened. If you were Z Team, I’d just roll my eyes and say, ‘What else is new?’ The three of you are going to be guest speakers at one ethics and decorum class per grade during this term.”

“Oh, for…” Kay started.

“Not. Another. Word.” Glen walked over and opened the door to his office. “Get out. And shame on you.”

Standing in the outer offices, Kay looked at the door that had been shut in his face and said, “I didn’t do anything! In fact I tried to stop it.”

Ram and Storm started walking down the hall toward the elevator. Storm turned to Ram and said, “Look what you did now.”

“You want me to? Pull your shirt up so I can see.”

“There’s nothing to see. You on the other hand are going to need some ice soon if you don’t want that eye to swell shut.”

Ram reached up and touched it. “You got me good,” he smiled.

Storm’s face split into a proud smile. “You’re gonna be wearing my mark for a while. Elora’s gonna chew your royal rear end when she hears about this.”

By that time Kay had caught up. From behind them he said, “Maybe you two are having a midlife crisis.”

Excerpt:

Luna had jumped in to organize and make sure that everyone had a place to sleep. In all the excitement, it didn’t escape Stalkson Grey’s notice that she was exceptionally anxious. She jumped when he approached silently from behind and encircled her in his arms.

“What troubles you, mate?” he said.

“What makes you think I’m troubled?”

He gave her a little squeeze. “Don’t play your games of female wiles. I know every one of your moods.” He kissed the top of her head. “And your expressions.” He kissed the top of her shoulder. “And your tone of voice.” When he nuzzled into her neck, she let out a little squeal followed by a giggle. “So tell me now. I know other places that reap more than…”

“Alright!” she said and squirmed until she turned around in his arms and faced his breast bone. “I didn’t have a chance to get to know the others. We met and,” she glanced up for a second, “fell in love. Then we moved here right away. What if they don’t like me?”

Stalkson Grey’s chest rumbled as he barked out a laugh. “Not like you? Then we’ll have to build a new facility to house the insane.”

“I’m serious.”

“As am I. Everyone loves you, Luna. Perhaps they were standoffish in the beginning, but that didn’t last long. Right?”

“Right.”

“So don’t worry. You’re alpha’s mate, the most powerful female in all the land.”

She smirked. “You mean except for the other alpha’s mates.”

“When I say the land, I mean our land.”

“I see.”

He ducked down to look her in the eyes. “I hope you do. No worries.”

“Okay.”

“No worries?”

She rolled her eyes. “No worries.”

“What I like to hear.” He looked around the clinic. “There’s nobody here. You want to play healer and…”

She laughed and slapped at him. “Get out of here. I’m trying to get ready for a population explosion.”

He sighed. “The burden of leadership.”

“Don’t make fun of me. You’re not the only one with responsibilities.”

“No fun intended. Promise.”

“Ha.”

He smacked her on the derriere playfully. “I was commiserating.”

“You were being an ass.”

He smiled wolfishly. “You mean I was being an ass man.”

She pointed to the door. “Out. I have work to do.” He pouted and gave her puppy dog eyes that almost made her relent. “Here’s the deal. You go peaceably now and tonight I’ll put on the red lace teddy you like so much…”

“Okay. Going.”

“Later.”

“Count on it,” he growled as he cleared the door.

A Slam Dunk Hit!

WOW! As a lifelong fan of author Victoria Danann, I knew that her new novel, Willem, would be a hit. I was absolutely correct. Ms. Danann has created a splendid world of magic and mayhem in her new Witches of Wimberley series. Willem is the first novel, and it’s fantastic! I fell hard for the entire citizenry of Wimberley, and Willem most of all. Ravish, the prize, is also incredible. And just when I thought it was going to slow down, the storyline sped up again.  Willem is a man after his own dreams. But what those dreams are, he’s not really sure. When the opportunity of a lifetime comes his way, he takes it, and all that comes with it, for the good or bad. Can he learn to trust his heart before it’s too late, or will his head lead him away from everything he knows to be true? Read on to find out. He laughed. “Man. I don’t know how you’re sitting on that stool next to me. How did you manage to get this far without knowing anything about what you’re doing here?” He shook his head. “Yes. I do mean there are women here who really are touched by the supernatural.”

I had to admit that I felt a thrill start in my nipples and run all the way through my body producing goosebumps, a cock twitch, and a half hard. What if it was true? I’d spent my whole life secretly hoping that I’d be lucky enough to have an actual encounter with the other side of reality, while not really believing that such a thing might be possible.

That’s when I realized that I’d been on the wrong path. For the first time I recognized and confronted the fact that I didn’t really want to be an actor. I hadn’t wanted to be a college student taking a foreign language I’d never use or studying geology, which I would never use. But I hadn’t really wanted to be an actor either. It was just Plan B more or less suggested by other people. My heart wasn’t in it at all.

Acting as my heart’s desire? Don’t make me laugh. Actually there’s not much laughable about wasting ten years pursuing something I didn’t even want.

That revelation made me feel like the dumbest guy sitting on a counter stool anywhere. Why hadn’t I clued in before? And what if I couldn’t get jobs acting because I wasn’t supposed to be acting.

That follow up revelation almost blew me right off the stool.

“If that’s true, it would be beyond incredible.”

“You scared?”

It hadn’t occurred to me to be scared before and maybe that just meant I was revealing an expanded capacity for stupidity.

“Should I be?” He shrugged. “Do you believe there’s a ghost at the hotel, too?”

Roger laughed again. He had a nice laugh. I wondered if that’s what they were looking for. All of a sudden I cared what they were looking for.

I wasn’t interested in contemplating a lifetime contract of marriage, but I could do a year with anybody if it meant doing actual hands-on research. Maybe I should change that to on site research.

He lifted a well-toned shoulder. “Who knows? I can’t say I’ve seen anything like that, but ley lines do intersect at the crossroads.”

I jerked my gaze back to his. “Ley lines? You know about ley lines?”

“I know enough.”

Deciding to let that go, I said, “So we’re going to meet the witches at the barbeque tonight?”

He shook his head while still taking a pull on his IBC. When he swallowed he said, “I think it’s just contestants and former winners. Our chance to talk to them about life in Wimberley or whatever. They’ll be at the big event tomorrownight though. The Witches’ Ball.”

Review:

Wow, wow, WOW! The second book in Ms. Danann’s Exlied series is outstanding! I loved Crave, and Dandelion is an amazing lady. Their story is filled with love and heartache, sorrow and success. It’s a roller coaster from the very beginning, and never slowing down. Crave is a man troubled and uncertain of who or what he is. Dandelion is a brave woman, striving to overcome the tremendous obstacles standing in the way of her happiness. I loved her determination, even in the face of certain defeat. I adore Crave as well, and his fierce drive to overcome his demons. This is a fantastic novel that would make a great beach read. I would recommend reading the novels in order. I did receive a complimentary copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.

“…cry, laugh, cry, laugh, sigh…mad, smile…cry a little more, laugh and LOVE IT!!

Crave surpassed the limits of mortal endurance and survived years of torture by the Rautt. He’d been isolated, chained in darkness, kept in filth, starved, taken to the point of death only to be restored so that his enemies could begin the cycle again. His family thought he was dead, but the woman who’d held his heart and his promise never gave up hope.

After his rescue, his memory and sanity gone, Dandy will plumb the depths of love to bring him back from hell, while his community sets out to prove that he’ll never be alone again.

Excerpt:

8 years earlier

Dandy and Crave had taken the hike up the western mountain to the waterfall pool. Everyone knew where it was, but few people went because the effort to get there was worth mention.

The pool was small, only fifteen feet across, but the water was beautiful and clear. It was also cold since it began its journey higher up as snow melt. Crave thought it was the prettiest spot in the world, surrounded by pink granite outcroppings, aspens and evergreen trees.

They’d removed their clothes and jumped in, Dandy shrieking about the cold while he pretended to be immune and laughed at her. They swam and splashed, but after a time ended up kissing and exploring each other’s postpubescent bodies.

In many ways Dandy thought those first shy touches were the most erotic things that would ever happen to her. It was then and there that Crave had also declared.

“I love you, Dandy. You’re my Promise.”

She laughed. “You can’t just say I’m your Promise, Crave. You have to ask me. Don’t you know that?”

He looked a little hurt, but started again. “Dandelion. I love you. Are you going to be my Promise or not?”

“I will.” She smiled showing off her white teeth. Then she grew serious as a thundercloud. “But I’d better never catch you with another female.”

Crave was offended at the suggestion. Even in his fantasies, the only female he could imagine mounting was Dandelion. “I wouldn’t do that.” Understanding flitted across his boyish features as he considered the implications and his expression changed to a look of worry. “Same for you. Right? No other males.”

Dandy smiled a perfectly coy female smile and drew closer. “I would never, Crave,” she breathed. “You’re my Promise.”

His forehead smoothed as he relaxed then promptly dunked her under with a mischievous grin.

Review:

As a lifelong fan of author Victoria Danann and her amazing Order of the Black Swan series, I was thrilled to receive a copy. With Journeyman, she has continued to develop and grow the world of the Black Swan knights, and in doing so, has made Journeyman one of the best in the entire series. It follows the story of Sir Glendennon Catch, as well as that of his former flame, Rosie Storm. And what a story they have! A roving knight, a runaway girl, and the loss of true love? All of this makes for one outstanding story!

Description:

For five years, Glendennon Catch had knocked around the globe as a floater, filling in wherever a team of vampire hunters was down a member. He’d buried six good knights and watched the life take its toll on countless others. He’d drunk his share of whiskey and bedded so many women he would hate to hear the count, but he’d never gotten over his first love. And, if he had a chance for a do-over, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t have chosen Rosie Storm over The Order.

Elora Rose Storm had spent five years nursing a heavy heart, while on a cross-dimensional mission to make the world a better place, especially wherever she found human/animal hybrids being mistreated. She’d seen horrors, righted wrongs where she could, and matured into a powerful witch/demon with altruistic leanings.

After all that time, unbeknownst to each other, both were headed home. To Jefferson Unit.

Excerpt:

There was a soft knock on the open door.

Glen turned to see Rosie standing there, looking unbelievably beautiful and uncertain. He pinned Monq with a look that should have caused him to explode into millions of tiny bits. “You. Did. Not,” he said slowly and distinctly, each word dripping with outrage.

“I did,” Monq said casually as he rose from his chair. Looking at Rosie, he said, “Come in, my dear. We’re having sea bass with pasta primavera and Alfredo sauce.”

He gestured toward the table, but Rosie didn’t move. She looked at Glen and said, “I saw you a few nights ago. In the Hub. You walked right by, but I guess you didn’t see me.”

Glen’s dark eyes flashed as he sneered. “I saw you.”

“Oh,” she said in a quiet voice. She searched his face and couldn’t find anything of the boy who had loved her. In addition to the physical changes, he had a hard edge that broadcasted bitterness.

Monq decided he’d better establish himself as an arbiter or things were going to deteriorate quickly. “I understand you two used to know each other.”

Glen smirked and looked away, shaking his head. “No. Not really. I thought I knew her. Turned out not.”

Rosie was beginning to understand the depth of the hurt she’d delivered to her first love. She’d been too selfish, too immature, and too shortsighted to grasp the consequences of her rash behavior. Now that she’d come face to face with the results, it looked like it was far too late to do anything about it. The damage wasn’t just done. It had clearly reinfected itself again and again and festered past the point of repair.

She stood there staring at Glen, wondering if an apology would help or make things worse. Looking at the way he was clenching his jaw, she decided things couldn’t get any worse.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Glen’s gaze jerked up to her eyes. He could see she was sincere and, if anything, it made him hate her more. At least it made him angrier.

“Oh, good. Dinner is here,” Monq exclaimed cheerfully.

All the while dinner was being set out Glen and Rosie continued to look at each other, but nothing changed. He was resolute in his rage. She was genuine in her contrition.

When the waiter was gone, Monq persuaded them to sit down at the table set for three.

“I don’t know how you see this playing out, old man.” said Glen to Monq.

“There’s no reason to be disrespectful to Mr. Monq,” Rosie chastised.

“Dr. Monq.” Monq corrected.

Clearly Glen didn’t like being chastised about manners, especially by Rosie. “I don’t know how you see this playing out, Dr. Monq, but no good can come from it.”

By that time Rosie was beginning to feel a little less sorry. “Oh? And why is that?” she asked.

“Because, wunderkind, you can’t change the past with a couple of words like ‘sorry’.”

“I know that, Glen. But apologizing is a start.”

“Really?” He bit out the word. “A start toward what?”

“It’s a start toward forgiveness and maybe, eventually, being friends again.”

He startled both Monq and Rosie by laughing out loud. “FRIENDS!?! Friends don’t give each other ultimatums and then disppear. FOR YEARS!”

Rosie sighed. “You’re right. That was dumb. And thoughtless. And if I could take it back…”

“Well, you can’t.” Glen fumed as he shoved a huge forkful of pasta into his mouth.

“Rosie, why don’t you tell us what you’ve been doing since you last saw Glen.”

“I’m not particularly interested in what she’s been doing,” Glen said, looking anywhere but at Rosie.

“Well,” she said to Monq, “I can tell you what he’s been doing. He’s been mastering the art of being an ass. You’ve changed, Glen.”

“I…” Monq started.

Glen cut him off. “You know what your problem is, Elora Rose? You haven’t changed. You’re still the same self-involved brat who thinks all she needs to do is prance back in here… Oh, look at me, I’m practically royalty. Black Swan’s precious little princess is sorry she made a mess.”

“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.”

“Yeah? And who gets to decide that? You? You get to decide everything, don’t you?”

“I made a mistake, Glen. A big one. But what you’ve made is a gigantic fucking mess of yourself.”

“You don’t know anything about me, little girl.”

Rosie stood up and threw her napkin down. “I know you’re the one releasing the hogs of war.”

Glen sat back and crossed his arms then gave her a smile that broke her and tugged at her heart strings at the same time. “That’s dogs of war,” he said with a smugness that made her want to smush his smarmy face.

“Forget what I said about being sorry. All I really want from you is to stay away from me.” As punctuation, on the way out of the room, she grabbed a pillow from Monq’s settee and threw it at Glen, who simply caught it and laughed.

“Fine by me.”

“Loser. Do you even have any friends?” She said it as a parting shot, but decided to add one last thing on her way out the door. “AND I DON’T PRANCE!”

That last question about having friends had hit a nerve with Glen. His taunting laughter melted into a seething anger that had him breathing hard.

“Bitch,” he fired back, but she was gone.

Monq said, “Well, that went better than I expected.”

Glen stood, glowering at Monq, then raised his dinner plate to shoulder height.

Monq managed to say, “Please! Not the fireplace again!”

Glen huffed. “How’s this?” He raised one bent leg and broke the plate over his own thigh.

As he stormed out of the room Monq said, “Dinner at seven tomorrow night. Don’t be late.”

Glen gave him the finger without turning around.

Monq sighed and looked at the broken plate and ruined food on the new carpet. He was thinking he was glad he’d opted for Alfredo sauce instead of marinara.

Review:

As a tremendous fan of author Victoria Danann, I was thrilled to be able to review this new novel. As an almost extension of the immense Order of the Black Swan series, it fits perfectly. I adore Carnal, a true bad boy hero if ever one was written. Rosie, the daughter of a renowned Black Swan Knight, is a wild character, and one who does honor to her demonic grandfather. The flow of the story was enchanting, and I did not want this book to end! There are lots of twists and turns to the plot, and the romance was spot on. I would love to read more about The Exiled, and really delve into their unique and beautiful world.

Description:

The angel, Kellareal, stopped the genocide of generations of hybrids, who had been bred for research and spent their entire lives imprisoned. Against orders, he spirited them away to a dimension where they would have freedom and purpose.

In a vindictive fit, Rosie Storm asked Kellareal for a place to hide out. He knew just the place for her to grow up, learn emotional control, and other things.

Carnal Banner 851 x 315

Excerpt:

The angel motioned her over.

“Rosie, this is Free. He’s the leader of the Exiled here at Newland.” Kellareal turned to Free. “This is my adopted niece, Rosie.”

Rosie jerked her attention to the angel. She’d never heard him suggest a title for their relationship before, adopted or otherwise.

“With your permission, I need a couple of minutes with Rosie to say goodbye. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks to check on things.”

“Always good to see you,” Free said to Kellareal, in a voice so gravelly it almost startled Rosie.

The angel took her by the elbow and walked her toward the edge of the settlement, near the wall.

“So here are the rules.”

“Rules?” She almost sounded alarmed.

“Yes. Rules,” he clipped, sounding serious enough to get her full attention. “Extraordinary measures have made these people stronger and smarter than humans. Given the right circumstances, they’re also more dangerous. As far as they know, you’re a human girl, who needs a place to hide out for a bit. I don’t want them to suspect differently. Do you get me?”

She pulled back, looking affronted. “Yes! I get you! You don’t want me to do anything a…” She made quotation marks with her fingers. “…’human girl’ wouldn’t do.”

“Exactly. And lose the adolescent attitude.” She rolled her eyes. “Rosie, please don’t make me look bad.”

She sighed. “Okay. I appreciate this.”

“Well, I hope you still feel that way in a couple of weeks of working here.”

“Working?” She seemed surprised.

“Yes. Working. It’s not all kittens and rainbows here. Pull your socks up.”

Rosie was narrowing her eyes and gearing up for a reply when Kellareal vanished leaving her wondering what ‘pull your socks up’ means. She turned toward the Exiled leader, whom Kellareal had called the Extant, and began walking in his direction. When a gust of wind ruffled her hair, she looked toward the east, where the human city could be seen below and in the distance.

Free looked down at her and smiled when she reached him. “Let’s get you situated. I see you didn’t bring belongings?”

She looked around like she’d misplaced them. “No. I guess I didn’t think about it.”

“No matter. We’ll sort it out. You can stay at my house with my family. We can always use help at the Commons. The unmated males spend a lot of time there. Drinking. Eating. Since they’re not mated.” He added, smiling as if that explained the whole of the universe. “If anybody gives you any trouble or unwanted attention, just come to me. I’ll take care of it.”

For a scant instant she wondered what it might be like to be a young woman who had to worry about men trying to press their physical advantage and thanked the gods she’d never have to find out how vulnerable that would make someone feel.

“Thank you,” she smiled in return. “I don’t have any experience working at… um, working.”

Free looked at her sideways. “You seem capable. You’ll learn.”

By the time they reached Free’s house, it was almost dark and evident that Newland had no power for lighting. The house, like the other buildings, was made of roughhewn logs, with a small but cheerful light coming from the front windows. It appeared to be three stories and larger than most of the other buildings.

Free opened the door and entered before Rosie. The room wasn’t plush or luxurious, but was definitely inviting. The upholstered furniture was worn, but friendly-looking. The fire was small, but welcoming.

“Serene!” His growly voice rumbled. Rosie couldn’t tell if he was displeased or if his voice always sounded like that.

A woman, roughly the same age as Free, appeared from the back of the house wiping her hands. She cocked her head at Rosie. “Hello,” she said. Her voice was also raspy, but not as deep as Free’s.

“Hello,” Rosie replied. “I’m…”

“She’s Kellareal’s ward,” Free interrupted. “She needs a place to stay for a while.”

Serene smiled. “Of course. You’re welcome.”

The door crashed open behind Rosie. “Hey, I…”

Rosie turned to see an extremely good-looking boy staring at her.

“Rosie. This is our youngest son, Charming.”

She looked from Free to Serene for a hint that he was joking, but saw none. Turning back to the new arrival she said, “Nice to meet you, Charming.”

She fully expected him to break into a fit of laughter and tell her that wasn’t really his name. Instead, he said, “Hi. Rosie.”

“She’s going to be staying with us for a while. Show her to Carnal’s room.”

“But…” Charming started.

“Show her to Carnal’s room.” Free repeated with a bit more insistence in his tone. “Then come back down for dinner.”

“Okaaaay.”

Rosie estimated Charming’s age at eighteen or so. He had honey colored hair, streaked with blonde, just like his mother. And yellow-green eyes. Also just like his mother. He was as tall as Free with a powerful, athletic build that suggested it would become even more impressive in a couple of years.

He gave Rosie a smile that was, well, charming and motioned for her to follow up the stairs. “This way.” He stopped at the second story landing and said, “Carnal’s room is there.” He pointed down the hall to the right. “My room is up there.” He pointed to a narrower staircase that led upward. “The attic room. It has a great view. I can see just about everything that happens in Newland,” he said proudly.

Rosie smiled and turned toward the room Charming had pointed out, noting that there was another room down the hall.

“Am I, um, displacing someone?”

“Displacing?” He opened the door to a decidedly masculine space. It was minimalist to the extreme. A wood platform bed with four thick square legs, but no headboard. A double shelf unit with a few books, rocks, and feathers on one side and folded clothes on the other side. There was a paraffin lamp on a small square stand by the bed and another on the shelf unit. There wasn’t much there, but what was there was neat as a military barracks. Bed perfectly made. Nothing out of place. “No. Not at all. This is my oldest brother’s room, but he doesn’t come home often.”

“Oh.”

“Do you need help with your stuff?”

“No. I, ah, didn’t bring anything. I’ll get my, ah, stuff in the next couple of days.”

Charming nodded. “Well, then, let’s have supper.”

When Rosie told Kellareal she needed a hideout, the last thing she had in mind was becoming an exchange student. She didn’t want to get to know and be part of a family, but not eating would raise suspicion. After all her cover was human and humans must eat. So she said, “Okay,” and followed Charming back downstairs.

“Is Carnal away at school?”

Charming paused mid step to laugh. “Nothing like that. No. He’s on patrol right now.” He resumed descent, but stopped at the bottom of the stairs. “Smell that? We’re having elk stew with parsnips and onions. You’ll love it.”

Rosie had to admit that it did smell good. The kitchen was square with a table and chairs in the middle of the room, but the first thing that attracted her eye was the wood stove and the precision cut stack of firewood next to it. The front panel had been left standing open to heat the room with coals left smoldering from cooking. She’d seen such stoves in books, but never in person.

Charming’s parents had already filled their bowls and were waiting patiently.

She sat down across from Charming and pulled in her chair just as he reached out and tore off a large chunk of brown bread from the dome-shaped loaf in the middle of the table. Next to it sat a pot of stew.

“Go on. Help yourself,” said Charming with his mouth full.

So she stood and ladled a generous portion into her bowl, while Free carried on quiet conversation about livestock.

After a few minutes, Charming said, “Why aren’t you eating?”

Everyone stopped and looked at Rosie.

“Well, it looks so good and smells even better,” she said, looking from one to the other. Serene smiled in response. “But to be honest, I’m worried about the sauce.” It was tomato-based. “These are the only clothes I have at the moment.”

They all looked at her thin white boyfriend shirt, which caused a blush.

Serene rose from the table and retrieved an apron. She flicked it in front of Rosie and tied the top close to her neck.

“There,” she said. “Tomorrow we’ll see about scrounging up some other clothes.” She looked at Free. “What was Kellareal thinking?”

Rosie was grateful enough to warm to the idea of getting to know the family.

Free shrugged. “Got a lot on his mind. Always.”

“Thank you,” Rosie told Serene as she dug into the stew. “Oh my gods. This is incredible!” she said before quite finishing the first bite.

Serene beamed and Free did not miss the signs of her pleasure, which in turn pleased him. He turned to Rosie.

“The large building next door is the Commons. Tomorrow morning, Charming will take you over there and introduce you to the woman in charge. She’ll lay it out for you and get you started right.”

“Okay. And thank you for having me.”

Serene interjected. “We’re very sincere when we say you’re welcome here for as long as you’d like to stay. Kellareal must think very highly of you. If you’re special to him, you’re special to us.”

Rosie nodded and returned her smile, not wanting to spout off about what a pain he could be. She thought better of being the one to tarnish the rosy esteem in which he was held.

“No reason to wait till tomorrow morning. I’m headed over there right now.” Charming was talking to Rosie. “Come and go with me. I’ll be the envy of Newland, arriving with a beautiful woman.”

Free glanced at me. “Do you want to go, Rosie?”

She hesitated. Charming pled with his eyes in such a cute way she had a hard time saying no. “Maybe for just a little while.”

Free then turned to Charming. “Make it clear that she’s a special guest of mine,” he warned.

“Sure, Pop.”

“Charming, this is not a joke. Can you be trusted to take care of Rosie?”

Charming grew instantly serious, transforming his looks so that he appeared older. “Yes.”

Free nodded.

Excerpt:

“Yeah. Well, I’m just saying. Do not ask any more questions. That boy goes through humans like corn shucks. You’re a good worker and I’ve gotten used to you. I don’t want anything messing with that.”

“Dandy,” Rosie laughed, “I think there was a compliment in there.”

“What was ‘in there’ was a good stiff warning, if you have any sense at all.”

“Okay. Okay. I hear you. Carnal is a bad boy. Play with fire, you get burned, and all that.”

“Play with fire, you get burned? I like that. And it definitely fits. Exiled females wouldn’t take Carnal’s escapades seriously, but human females are different. They get the idea that a fuck is a promise. Or so I hear.”

Rosie nodded. “Got it.”

“Good. Back to work. And forget about Carnal.”

“Right.”

“You’re not forgetting about him, are you?”

“I am.” Dandy raised her eyebrows. “I am! Really!”

Dandy shook her head and turned back to cleaning the tap. “Don’t say I didn’t tell you.”

The door opened, letting in the chill. Rosie looked up to see Carnal striding toward the bar looking for all the world like he owned it. And everything else.

“Speak of a demon on horseback,” Dandy muttered and Rosie made a mental note to ask how that had come to be a saying.

Carnal took a stool right in front of her. “Dandelion,” he said while looking at Rosie.

“Carnal,” she answered matter-of-factly.

“Rosie.” He said her name in a way that was teasing, but also like he’d known her for a long time, intimately.

“Carnal.” Rosie tried to mimic Dandy’s off-handedness.

“What do you need?” Dandy asked him point blank.

“Why so hostile, sister? Just stopping by to say hello and welcome Kellareal’s guest.”

“Kellareal’s guest is off limits to you.”

Dandy got his attention for the first time. “Why does everybody keep saying that? It’s not as if I eat young maidens.”

“It’s exactly as if you eat young maidens,” Dandy countered.

He laughed at that. “There’s nothing scary about me, Dandy. I’ve never forced anything on a female and I never would.”

“Yeah,” she said. “You just go around being you.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

Dandy just shook her head and turned her back to him.

“Well,” he said, as he cleaned the claws he’d extended on his right hand. Rosie watched with fascination, thinking the abnormality was oddly sexy. “Just thought it would be good to get to know the person who’s sleeping in my bed.” His chin remained dipped while his eyes found hers.

Rosie just blinked, not sure how to respond to that, and not wanting to become a corn shuck, metaphorically or any other way. But even with her limited experience, she could see that Dandelion was right. Rosie was unable to tear her gaze away, thinking that Carnal’s seductive looks and ways were trouble with a capital “T” and that rhymes with “D” and that stands for drool.

With effort she turned away and began stacking glasses for easy access to accommodate the lunch crowd. She didn’t turn around again, but after a few minutes heard Carnal say.

“Okay. Gotta go. Later, Dandy. Later, Rosie.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Rosie saw Dandy toss off an annoyed and dismissive wave. Rosie said, “Bye,“ but didn’t turn around.

Both of them felt the temperature drop when the door opened.
